How to Care for a Fabric Sofa: A Practical Guide

A quality fabric sofa should look good for a decade, but the difference between a sofa that ages well and one that doesn't is mostly down to a few simple habits. Here's how to keep yours looking like the day it arrived.

The weekly two-minute routine

Dust and crumbs are abrasive: left in the weave, they slowly wear the fabric every time someone sits down. Once a week, go over the sofa with a vacuum cleaner's upholstery brush: seats, back, arms and under the cushions. That's genuinely most of the job.

Rotate and plump the cushions

Everyone has a favourite seat, and it shows after a year. Rotate and flip seat cushions every couple of weeks so they wear evenly, and plump them after heavy use to help the filling recover its shape.

Deal with spills immediately, and blot, don't rub

Speed matters more than product. Blot spills straight away with a clean, dry, white cloth, rubbing pushes the liquid deeper and can damage the pile. For most marks, a cloth lightly dampened with lukewarm water is enough. Always test any cleaner on a hidden spot first, like the back corner near the floor.

Keep it out of harm's way

Direct sunlight fades fabric over time. If your sofa sits in front of a bright south-facing window, closing the curtains on the sunniest afternoons makes a real difference. Keep sofas at least 30 cm from radiators: constant heat dries and weakens both fabric and foam.

Once or twice a year: a deeper clean

An annual clean with an upholstery cleaner (or a professional service) lifts the ground-in dirt a vacuum can't reach. Check the care label first: fabrics differ, and the label tells you whether water-based cleaners are safe.
