How to Choose a Sofa Bed for a Small Apartment

Start with the room, not the sofa

Before you look at a single product, measure the wall where the sofa will live and — crucially — the floor space in front of it. A sofa bed needs clearance to unfold: as a rule of thumb, allow at least 100–120 cm of free floor in front of the seat. Check the 'sleeping area' dimension in the product specs and mark it out on your floor with masking tape. It takes two minutes and prevents the most common mistake people make.

Pick the right size for how you'll use it

If the bed is for occasional guests a few nights a year, a 1 or 2 seater sofa bed is usually enough and keeps the room feeling open. If someone will sleep on it every week — or it's your own bed in a studio — go for a 3 seater or corner sofa bed with a wider, flatter sleeping surface.

Don't skip the storage
