The number one worry when buying a sofa online is simple: will it actually get into the house? Irish homes — from Georgian terraces with narrow hallways to modern apartments with tight lift access — all have their quirks. The good news: ten minutes with a measuring tape answers the question for certain.
The three measurements that matter
Grab a tape measure and note these down:
- Door width: measure the narrowest point of the frame, with the door open fully
- Hallway width and any turns: a sofa that fits the door can still get stuck on a tight corner — measure the diagonal of the turn
- Room path: doorways, radiators and fixed furniture between the front door and the sofa's final spot
Compare against the sofa's smallest side
Sofas are carried on their side or end, so the key figure is usually the sofa's height or depth — not its length. Check the product dimensions: if the sofa's depth (or height, whichever is smaller) is at least a few centimetres less than your narrowest opening, it will fit. Apartments: lifts and stairwells
For apartment deliveries, measure the lift door and the lift's internal depth, or the width of the stairwell at its tightest turn. Modular and corner sofas often arrive in separate sections, which makes tight access much easier — if access is a concern, a modular sofa can be the safest choice.
